Tibetan Buddhist Healing Practice

Reversal of disease and health maintenance are accomplished by four progressive treatments.

  1.    Change of Diet
  2.    Change of Behavior
  3.    Herbal Medicines
  4.    Acupuncture/Moxibustion
  5.    Treat Emotional Imbalances
The first two are changes in the type of food we eat and behavior we engage in. Only when these prove ineffective is the physician advised to prescribe herbal medicine and only when this also fails is he or she to resort to treatment such as Acupuncture and moxibustion. However, none of these treatments will have a lasting effect unless they are accompanied by spiritual transformation. If ignorance and its associated delusions remain festering inside, sooner or later they will give rise to disease and the recurring miseries of dissatisfaction and suffering. Thus Buddhas such as Shakyamuni and the Lapis Healing Master are referred to as great physicians not just because of their medical abilities as great as these are but because they have the compassion, wisdom and skillful means to diagnose and treat the root delusions underlying all mental and physical malaise.

8 fold path of virtue

According to the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, misery is an inevitable part of life, but with diligent practice, one may overcome it.   Misery (suffering) originates from desire, and desire can be eliminated. To overcome desire, and hence, abolish suffering, one should follow the eightfold path of virtue consisting of the following qualities.     VIRTUOUS QUALITY 1. Right understanding 2. Right thought 3. Right speech 4. Right actions 5. Right livelihood 6. Right effort 7. Right mindfulness 8. Right concentration

The 6 Moral precepts are also known as the Six Perfections

1] Generosity 2] Ethics/ Self-Discipline 3] Patience 4] Joyous Effort 5] Concentration 6] Wisdom

Twelve Vows of the Medicine Buddha

Upon attaining Enlightenment, according to the Medicine Buddha Sutra

1. To illuminate countless realms with his radiance, enabling anyone to become a Buddha just like him. 2. To awaken the minds of sentient beings through his light of lapis lazuli. 3. To provide the sentient beings with whatever material needs they require. 4. To correct wrong views and inspire beings toward the true nature of reality. 5. To help beings follow the 6 Moral Precepts, even if they failed before. 6. To heal beings born with deformities, illness or other physical sufferings. 7. To help relieve those suffering from mental poverty and the disease of lack. 8. To help women who wish to be reborn as men achieve their desired rebirth. 9. To help heal mental afflictions and delusions. 10. To help the oppressed be free from suffering. 11. To relieve those who suffer from terrible hunger and thirst. 12. To help clothe those who are destitute and suffering from cold and parasites.

According to the Four Tantras, the fundamental cause of every disease is to be found in the three poisonous delusions ignorant bewilderment, attachment and hatred occupying the hub of the wheel of samsaric existence. These three root delusions lead to imbalances in three so-called humors (phlegm, wind and bile), the various bodily constituents (blood, flesh, bone, etc.) and waste products, or impurities (excrement, urine and perspiration. Along with these, the four contributing circumstances of time, emotions, food and behavior cause the imbalance to spread through the skin, the flesh, meets the bones and invades the organs.
